Product Description
This volume is based on three years of teaching experiments with a group of primary school students as they progressed from the 3rd to the 5th grade (ages 9 to 12). Whereas traditional pedagogical approaches focus on the nature of the subject matter being taught, Hedegaard assumes that any teaching program ought to incorporate children's everyday concepts and motivations. She relates this 'double move' in teaching to situated learning and teaching and subsequently presents principles for putting the approach into practice.
A second and more subtle aim of the experiments is to promote developmental learning, rather than mere subject mastery. Special attention is paid to the ways children transform and develop concepts, learn modes of thinking and adopt motivations.
This study will be a valuable resource for anyone trying to optimize children's learning, including primary teachers, school administrators, child psychologists and parents.

Product Description
Studying Children is the first book of its kind to offer a theoretical and practical discussion of how to undertake research using cultural-historical theory when researching the everyday lives of children.
The authors discuss the complexities of child development, providing a critique of alternative perspectives of research and notions of development. They provide a number of case studies following researchers in early childhood as they move from a developmental approach to a cultural-historical framework for observing and planning for young children.
The chapters:

Provide a solid framework for understanding the foundations of this approach
Address the importance of viewing research as an interactive technique
Offer guidance on how to collect and interpret material
Show how to make observations of and interviews with children, within a dialectical research approach
Present examples of how to write and present findings using this technique
The book is rich with examples of how to undertake specific methods, such as surveys, experiments, case studies, digital video observations, interviews, and children as researchers.
Studying Children is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and students working in the field of Early and Middle Childhood at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Product Description (amazon)
Gunther Kress argues for a radical reappraisal of the phenomenon of literacy, and hence for a profound shift in educational practice. Through close attention to the plethora of objects which children constantly produce--drawings, cut-outs, writings and collages-- Kress suggests a set of principles which reveal the underlying coherence of children's actions-- actions which allow us to connect them with attempts to make meaning before they acquire language and writing.

This book provides fundamental challenges to commonly held assumptions about both language and literacy and thought and action. It places these challenges within the context of speculation about the abilities which will become essential for children as young adults, and calls for the radical decentering of language in educational theory and practice.

Product Description (provided by amazon)

How can we help children to become independent learners? The third edition of this invaluable companion for Early Years practitioners provides a broad-ranging and up-to-date review of current thinking and best practice within Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 education. Based on the basic truth that an effective early years curriculum must start with the children, this book focuses on their needs and their potential. The best teaching must have a strong element of fun, wonder and excitement: David Whitebread and Penny Coltman show how play is a crucial part of this. Each chapter combines a review of important principles with practical and inspiring classroom examples. This 3rd edition has been fully revised and updated in light of the introduction of the Early Years Foundation Stage, and includes completely new chapters concerned with classroom organisation to support independent learning, outdoor learning, speaking and listening and mathematics in the early years. The authors review all major areas of the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 curriculum and a range of basic issues and principles, including: an analysis of current research into how children learn discussions of general issues such as classroom organisation, curriculum management, and assessment a detailed section on play and language chapters covering individual curriculum areas across all 6 Foundation Stage areas of learning and across the areas of the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum The book is essential reading for all Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 trainee teachers, their tutors and mentors, and serving teachers working with children in the 3-7 age range wishing to reflect upon and develop their practice.
